Career

I'm an English language teacher at one of the secondary girls' schools in Bahrain. I teach students of 15-18 years of age. They study five courses of English as a Foreign language in their three year of Secondary Education; divided into five semesters. The school has recently implemented e-learning where a computer lab was set up with networked computers and a smartboard. Therefore, my one and only interest in to develop myself in the field of ICT in learning and teaching and to participate in the development of my students' levels using any available tool that would motivate them to learn and to achieve higher standards. I love surfing the Net and updating myself so as not to feel behind and to bridge the gap between this and the coming generation and myself.

That's a very large class and classroom - do you find it's easier to work on screen or from the smart board? Nice to see you at work Sameera ;-)

The smartboard is easier to use since you have everything at hand. All the buttons are active. You could download any attachments on spot and access the Net. As for the number of the class, you're right, it's very big and controlling it could be a difficult matter. We do have an IT specialist next door and she monitors the students' pcs to check what they're doing.

What a great classroom. All that techonology. No wonder you want to keep yourself up to date. Making the most of all those computers and keeping your students focused on the lesson must take a lot of energy.

Wow! What a fantastic classroom with so modern equipment. I can only dream about it. In the same it could be a little difficult to monitor students work.
I'd like to have the same modern classroom but I would set up computers in the way they couldn't cover students from their teacher and it would be perfect to have a little space for movement.
Dreams! Dreams! Dreams!

Yes, I think these "lost behind screen" labs are soon being replaced by PCs round the edge of the room and nice round tables in the centre... the classrooms of the future with the students centrally located!

Thanks for the great comments dear colleagues.. made my day.. the aim of setting up the class with computers was to implement e-learning in the school. Our school was one of the targeted ones, therefore, this room was originally an art lab turned into computer lab. In my MA, I investigated the different settings of computer labs for the different uses and came up with some conclusions, which definitely contradict the layout of this room. I hope that in future our computer labs would be more efficient allowing for individual and group work, computer work and off computer work.. for the time being, I think this would do.. I must say, we have assistants next door monitering all the computers in the lab and sending instant messeges to those who play with the pc.
